Couples Retreat Hanmer Springs — How to Plan the Perfect Weekend

By Adela, Co-owner & Spa Director  ·  May 2026  ·  7 min read

Hanmer Springs is one of New Zealand's most loved spots for a couples getaway — and it's not hard to see why. The thermal pools, the mountain air, the slower pace. It's genuinely easy to disconnect here in a way that's harder to do in the city. But a great couples retreat doesn't just happen. The difference between a good weekend and a really memorable one usually comes down to a bit of thought beforehand. Here's how to plan it well.

Start with where you're staying

Accommodation sets the tone for everything else. If you're sharing a villa with thin walls and a view of a car park, no amount of nice spa treatments will quite make up for it.

For a couples retreat in Hanmer Springs, our Alpine Spa Villa is the obvious choice. It's a standalone villa — no shared walls, no other guests — with a private outdoor hot tub and mountain views. Adults only. You can soak in the tub at midnight if you want to. That kind of private space changes a weekend completely.

If you're travelling with another couple or want a bit more space, the Three Bedroom Villa is fully self-contained with a large deck, BBQ, and great views. It sleeps up to eight but works beautifully for two couples who want their own space to come back to.

Both options include access to in-house guest rates on spa treatments — which makes combining your stay with a treatment or two genuinely good value.

Build in at least one spa treatment together

This is the part that most couples say they wish they'd done sooner. There's something about experiencing a massage together — side by side, in the same room, at the same time — that's quite different from booking separately.

Our Couples Massage is a 60-minute full-body massage for two in our double treatment room. It's a proper shared experience rather than two parallel ones. For something more luxurious, the 90-minute Luxury Couples Massage gives you more time and a more immersive treatment.

If you want to go all in, the Couples Ultimate Bliss Package combines a full-body massage with a facial for each person — a proper half-day of treatments that leaves you both glowing.

One practical tip: book your treatments for the afternoon of your first day rather than the morning. You'll have had time to settle in, relax a little, and the treatments land differently when you're not still half in travel mode.

The thermal pools — when and how

The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools are a short drive from Vibrant Living and worth building into your weekend. A few suggestions on timing:

  • Go in the evening. The pools after dark, particularly in cooler months, are a completely different experience to a busy midday visit. Steam rising, stars overhead, far fewer people.
  • Go before your massage, not after. The heat loosens muscles and means your treatment is more effective. If you soak in the pools and then come straight to Vibrant Living for a couples massage, the combination is really quite something.
  • Book in advance. The pools get busy, particularly on weekends. Online booking is available at hanmersprings.co.nz.

Leave room for nothing

The temptation with a weekend away is to fill it. Every hour accounted for, every meal booked, every activity scheduled. Resist this.

Some of the best moments of a couples weekend happen in the gaps — a long breakfast with nowhere to be, an afternoon in the hot tub reading, a walk through the village without a destination in mind. Build in at least half a day of nothing and see what happens.

A suggested weekend itinerary

Friday evening: Arrive, check in, settle into the villa. Evening in the private hot tub. Early night.

Saturday morning: Slow breakfast (add our 2-course organic breakfast when you book). Walk into the village. Browse the shops. Coffee somewhere.

Saturday afternoon: Couples massage at Vibrant Living. Back to the villa to rest. Dinner out in the village or cook at the villa.

Saturday evening: Evening at the thermal pools.

Sunday morning: Another slow morning. Late check-out if available. Head home feeling like different people.

What it actually costs

A decent couples weekend in Hanmer Springs doesn't have to be expensive. As a rough guide:

  • Alpine Spa Villa: from NZ$280/night
  • Couples Massage (60 min): NZ$339
  • Thermal pools entry: around NZ$30–40 each
  • 2-course organic breakfast: NZ$40 per person

As an in-house guest at Vibrant Living, you'll receive a discount code for spa treatments — so your couples massage will be at a reduced rate on top of these prices.
