More than just hot pools
Hanmer Springs sits in a broad alpine basin in the Lewis Pass foothills, roughly 90 minutes north of Christchurch. It is, at once, one of New Zealand's most beloved weekend escapes and one of its best-kept secrets. Beyond the famous thermal pools lies a whole landscape worth exploring — ancient beech forest, mountain bike trails, river canyons, and a village unhurried enough that you might actually feel yourself slow down. Here is our guide to making the most of it.
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa
The thermal complex at the heart of the village is the reason most people first discover Hanmer Springs — and rightly so. Geothermally heated pools range from pleasantly warm to genuinely hot, and a visit here after a day on the trails is one of life's simple pleasures. There are outdoor and indoor pools, private thermal pools, a hydroslide complex for families, and a café on site.
It gets busier on weekends and during school holidays, so an early morning or weekday visit rewards you with a far more tranquil experience. If you are staying at Vibrant Living, the pools are less than five minutes by car or a pleasant fifteen-minute walk through the village.
- Open 7 days, from 10am daily
- Adults from NZ$22 · children from NZ$14

A day at the spa
For many guests, the best thing to do in Hanmer Springs is to do very little — slowly, and very well. A day spa treatment at Vibrant Living is a natural complement to a morning walk or afternoon at the thermal pools. Adela offers massages, facials, healing sessions, and pampering packages, all using premium organic products and delivered with genuine personal care.
Whether you're looking for a 45-minute back treatment after a long drive or a full half-day pampering package, there's a treatment at Vibrant Living that fits. Midweek massage specials from NZ$135.

The village of Hanmer Springs is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes, but it has more than enough to keep you occupied between activities. A handful of good cafés, some excellent spots for lunch, a few boutique shops, and a general atmosphere that invites you to slow down.
Amuri Avenue is the main street and home to most of the eateries, the i-SITE visitor centre, and the thermal pools entrance. Grab a coffee, browse the local shops, or simply sit in the sun — Hanmer does unhurried exceptionally well.
